Annual Report 2024

The Annual Report of the Anne Frank House with an overview of its activities in 2024.

Anne Frank’s Story, More Urgent Than Ever

Wars, growing hatred toward Jews, Muslims, and people who are ‘different,’ democratic values under pressure, and elected officials embracing authoritarian ideologies — these issues are increasingly dominating the daily news and public debate. In this troubling reality, Anne Frank’s story is more urgent than ever. As a Jewish girl forced into hiding because of the Nazi regime, Anne Frank shows in her diary what happens when intolerance and hatred prevail — but also how hope and ideals can endure, even in the darkest of times.

In 2024, we remained fully committed to our museum and educational mission, passed down to us by Otto Frank, Anne’s father. We welcomed visitors from all over the world to the Anne Frank House and developed educational products and programs that encouraged young people to reflect on the consequences of discrimination and exclusion. We made use of digital tools, promoted dialogue, and focused on building bridges between people of different backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs.

Our traveling Anne Frank exhibitions are an important way to reach young people and adults around the world. In 2024, we prepared a major new museum exhibition in New York, featuring over 100 original collection items, to open on 27 January 2025.

Our activities are only possible thanks to the dedication of our staff, volunteers, partners, and donors. Their support enables us to continue our educational mission and to keep reaching new generations with the life story and diary of Anne Frank.

Education now!

With our educational programs and products, we aim to encourage young people to reflect on past and present social developments related to antisemitism, racism, discrimination, freedom, equal rights, and democracy. Anne Frank’s life story is always the foundation. Through strong networks and partnerships, we scale up our efforts in sports, schools, on the streets, and across social media, increasing the impact of our educational activities.

In 2024, we developed new materials on the importance of democracy. We created scenario maps about the democratic rule of law and used these maps in various workshops and training sessions. We enriched the Stories that Move toolbox with new stories from young people about democracy, focusing on topics such as the right to vote, combating fake news, and the right to protest. This free, online toolbox for teachers — featuring stories from young people across Europe — encouraged students to reflect on the experiences of their peers and created space to share stories and emotions, fostering greater understanding.

For the online teacher platform LessonUp, we developed the lesson Democracy is Yours, based on the video Democracy is Yours. The video was featured in our temporary exhibition The Frank Family in Frankfurt am Main, 1929–1933 at the museum, and was also available on our website and YouTube channel.

‘Thank you so much for posting this. I saw it almost a year ago when visiting. There are currently many parallels to that time period. It is a scary time period. I hope sharing this video will help.’

The year in focus

We are concerned

We are deeply concerned about the war between Israel and Hamas, which is inflicting deep wounds on Israelis and Palestinians and fuelling mistrust and hatred between the two peoples. We are also deeply concerned about the consequences of this war in the rest of the world: the increasing hardening, the increasing hatred, against Jews, against Muslims.

No one should be held personally responsible for the actions of others – not for the actions of fellow citizens, fellow believers, or for the policies of a government. Jews are not responsible for the policies of the Israeli government, Muslims are not responsible for the actions of Hamas.

‘Oh, it’s sad, very sad that the old adage has been confirmed for the umpteenth time: what one Christian does is his own responsibility, what one Jew does reflects on all Jews.’
