Discussing fundamental rights

Human rights or fundamental rights are important for everyone who wants to live in freedom. During this lesson, students learn about fundamental rights and engage in a step-by-step discussion. Using a set of cards, students discuss which fundamental rights they think are important. They also discuss the impact on their daily lives if fundamental rights are limited or taken away.

This educational material invites students to discuss the importance of fundamental rights. The material is easy to use. As teacher, you can choose which steps of the lesson you want to do with your class.

You can use this lesson at all levels of secondary and vocational education. The discussion and questions about fundamental rights can be adjusted to the level of the group.

Learning goals
  • Students think about (the importance of) fundamental rights and what happens if these rights are (partly) taken away.
  • Students learn that fundamental rights also apply to other people and work in both directions.
  • Students learn how to explain their thoughts and opinions.
  • Students practise listening to others and their opinions.
